It works by pumping water from one reservoir to another (located at a higher altitude) when there is a surplus of energy, thereby increasing the potential energy of the pumped water mass. Likewise, when energy is required, water is allowed to fall from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir, passing through a turbine where electricity is generated. One of its advantages is its long useful life, which can exceed 50 years.
