Microsoft promised on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 during the Ignite 2021 event that its workplace collaboration software, Teams, will soon support calls with end-to-end encryption (E2EE).
The feature will be available to commercial customers in the first half of this year. Initially, it will only be available for unscheduled 1-to-1 calls, but will be expanded over time as users’ needs change.
“You’ll be able to specify which members of your organization will be able to use end-to-end encryption. Future updates will be made to support our customers’ compliance needs, including expansion to scheduled calls and online meetings,” the company said.
Teams was one of the software programs that uk mobile database astonishing growth during 2020, when much of the work migrated to online environments. Another software that grew was Zoom, one of its competitors, which has supported end-to-end encryption for some time.
In addition to end-to-end encryption in Teams, another new feature for the corporate world announced during Ignite 2021 was support for passwordless authentication in Azure Active Directory.
Instead of typing a password, users will be able to log in to their accounts using biometrics (such as facial recognition and fingerprints) with Windows Hello, authentication apps like Microsoft Authenticator that provide a temporary authorization code, and physical keys like FIDO-compliant tokens and USB sticks.
The company also mentioned something called a Temporary Access Pass, which will provide a short code valid for a limited time, like Microsoft Authenticator, that system administrators can send to people to initially log into a system or regain access.
“When there are passwords, there is an inherent risk to the organization,” says Microsoft’s vice president of marketing for security, compliance and identity, Vasu Jakkal, in a statement to Yahoo!.
“It’s a long journey, but we hope that passwordless authentication will become the norm. It’s a more secure way of doing things, and the more we can adopt it, I think the more we can protect ourselves and our organizations,” he said.
