Stories are everywhere. In Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and even WhatsApp. Facebook wants to get us used to augmented reality by introducing stories on every platform . That became clear when they announced in April that they would open their new platform Camera Effects to developers. Filters on your face and filters on the world, that is the augmented reality that stories now offer. There will be many more interesting applications that developers will come up with and create. Why are stories hot now and even the content of the future?
“If the camera is the new keyboard, then the future of social media will look more like a phone number list photo or video slideshow than a Word document. While Snapchat invented Stories, this format will be introduced on every social media channel.” What exactly does this sentence from the Techcrunch article mean , how can the camera be the new keyboard?
In 2006, Facebook launched the news feed. A fairly chronological timeline at the time, where each new message was placed above the old message, which you scrolled down through. Moreover, it was text-oriented, because you still had to upload photos from your camera. Now that everyone has a smartphone, this small screen dictates what we see, experience and make ourselves, and such a text-oriented feed is simply outdated. Facebook also saw this happening thanks to Snapchat and therefore copied the format. Both Snapchat and Facebook have stated that the camera is the new keyboard, and that content will now be made and consumed with the smartphone camera.
