Sports streaming in Australia
Nine also holds the exclusive Australian Olympic broadcast rights for the Games, spanning from last year’s event in Paris through to the 2032 Brisbane Games.
Sports streaming is becoming increasingly competitive in the country. News Corp recently finalised the sale of Foxtel Group to global sports streaming provider DAZN, following approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and other regulatory authorities.
DAZN’s acquisition of Foxtel Group includes Kayo, Foxtel, Binge and Hubb.
Nine’s Stan is now reportedly on the cusp of acquiring the Australian broadcast rights for the English Premier League and is in advanced stages of negotiations with Optus which currently holds the rights to the league until 2028.
Optus has indicated that it will focus more on its mobile business and less on its sports streaming division.
Adding to the sports streaming mix, Disney+ has added two live ESPN channels, which feature the NBL, NBA, MLB, NFL, as well as multiple sporting franchises.
