A wave of strange late-night text messages has swept the United States.

If you've woken up in the middle of the night to a strange text message that seems completely out of place, you're not alone. A wave of mysterious messages has flooded America's phones overnight, including messages from friends, family members, and former acquaintances. For some, it could be cause for panic.
But as always, the answer is prosaic. Telecom provider Syniverse described a turkey phone number library server crash in February that left nearly 170,000 messages undelivered. When the server was reactivated Thursday, all the once-forgotten messages had been sent. In a statement sent to The Associated Press by Verizon, Syniverse said it was reviewing its internal procedures. The company typically deletes messages from its servers in such cases.
Operator error has had dramatic effects. For example, Stephanie Bovee, a 28-year-old from Portland, woke up at 5 a.m. to a text from her sister that simply said “omg.” Having just given birth the day before, she immediately assumed something had happened to her newborn nephew in the hospital. She began calling every relative to find out what had happened. It took three hours before she learned that everything was fine.
This story can tell about the responsibility that operators have to their customers. And how an accidental mistake can lead to very unpleasant consequences for the consumer.
