The aim of Belfast-based coffee shop Established Coffee was to cash in on the publicity resulting from the series' production error, which the owner claims could have generated $4 billion. But by being labelled a "Starbucks coffee shop" the establishment did not make any money. Now they hope that at least the blame will be removed from the American giant.
Headlines in mainstream media reported that while the kazakhstan phone number data drink did not have a logo, it was unmistakably a Starbucks coffee. This led to a completely free advertising campaign for the chain, which cost HBO dearly. After the error, the production company said that Starbucks was not responsible for the drink seen in the episode.
"It was disappointing that everyone thought it was Starbucks coffee," Mark Ashbridge said in an interview. Several Belfast establishments claimed ownership of the drink, but Emilia Clark, who plays Daenery Targaryen, revealed that the drink came from Established Coffee. Ashbridge said that because social media called the drink "a Starbucks coffee" it caused his shop to miss out on a multi-million dollar opportunity.
