Microsoft has announced the launch of a digital education and awareness project through its Minecraft Education learning platform , with the aim of developing digital skills and abilities in 5th and 6th grade primary school students from public schools in Algete, Meco and San Sebastián de los Reyes . With the collaboration of the Community of Madrid, local governments, and entities specialising in digital education, Letcraft and PantallasAmigas , the initiative will cover various training content linked to digitalisation, cybersecurity and programming teaching, and will promote STEM vocations among minors. Microsoft's project, Minecraft Education, which also has the support of the Community of Madrid, may be extended in the future to other municipalities in the region.
The demand for professionals with digital skills is constantly increasing and training and promoting these skills to improve employability are Microsoft's objectives. This project in the public schools of Algete, Meco and San Sebastián de los Reyes is part of the social and training initiatives linked to the opening of the company's new cloud data center region , located in the Community of Madrid, which will give a boost to the creation of an ecosystem of technology companies that seek to take advantage of these new infrastructures to develop services based on Artificial Intelligence. Microsoft wants to contribute to promoting STEM vocations from an early age with the aim of providing these municipalities with a more qualified and future-ready workforce.
This educational project is promoted by Microsoft's community relations department, which aims to contribute to the social growth of the municipalities where the company's Data Centers will be located. Training and the promotion of employability are the main strategic pillars that it wants to promote in the communities in which it operates, along with environmental sustainability and local development.
Digital education and cybersecurity training
In a context in which new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence are redefining the educational experience in classrooms, Microsoft is committed to innovation in education, promoting accessibility, inclusion and responsible use of technology to enhance learning everywhere.
The initiative, which will begin in September 2024, will be structured around various activities ranging from practical workshops, which combine a playful approach with the benefits that Minecraft offers in terms of education, to online training events. 50 workshops will be held using the Microsoft platform, Minecraft Education , in 25 educational centers (7 in Algete, 2 in Meco and 16 in San Sebastián de los Reyes) and will benefit a total of 1,250 students in the 5th and 6th grades of primary school . Four-hour online training will also be offered to teachers, introducing them to the use of Minecraft Education as an educational tool for the development of digital skills.
“This project reflects Microsoft’s commitment to strengthening the digital skills of students in the municipalities where our Data Centers are located. We are excited to contribute to digital education and cybersecurity, preparing the next generations for an ever-changing digital world,” says María Comín, Director of Pre-University Education at Microsoft.
Educational resources and events for the community
The project, in collaboration with Letcraft Education , will provide guides, activities and best practices on the use of technology, as well as educational video clips. It also includes the creation of a free and accessible resource portal, specifically designed to provide educational materials for both families and teachers.
The online event, aimed at families and teachers, will include talks given by experts in digital education, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, as well as educational experiences shared by teachers and organizations such as PantallasAmigas , dedicated to the digital training of children and adolescents.
Final event and sharing of experiences
The final event of the project will be a face-to-face session to share lessons learned from the use of technology in the classroom. Teachers and students from the three municipalities will participate, along with experts from Microsoft Education, in addition to the collaboration of Letcraft and the Community of Madrid.
