Nine years ago, I presented my final year project and, if it weren't for the good Ángel Ramos, who far surpassed Saint Job in the patience he had with me, I would hardly be able to write these lines. As Quique Setién said the other day (may he continue to be at Barça for many years, by the way): "I wasn't an easy player either."
In the last chapter of the project, and as it usually happens, the most important of all because it is when the murderer is discovered, he spoke about the Electric Vehicle and the penetration forecasts it had in the market at that time. However, time has proven wrong all the gurus who predicted future figures and scenarios.
ImageIn the midst of this turbulent 2020 (which will be studied by our grandchildren in their History class “they will cross themselves”), we can say that they were wrong. But why? Of course, the forecast that there would be more than 1 million electric vehicles in our country this year has not been met. But it has not even come close to the mark (greetings to Juanfran as well).
Consulting the DGT website, we are canadian cfo email lists around 60,000: 40,000 are passenger cars and 20,000 motorcycles approximately) . In fact, a significant percentage of this figure is due to the carsharing vehicles that have been proliferating in large cities. It is clear that private use of the same continues to be an option that is not taking off. But, was this not the future? Is it Groundhog Day?
In my opinion, there are four reasons but two of them are main:
Price : Although they are gradually becoming more competitive, there is no doubt that the initial outlay to purchase an electric car is significantly higher than that of a combustion car. It is true that maintenance and especially “fuel” are much cheaper, but in an economic crisis situation like the one we are experiencing, it is difficult to face this initial outlay.
Charging infrastructure : once again, Spain is at the tail end of Europe. We have fewer than 8,000 charging points in the country . To give a local example, France has more than 100,000 points.
We are left with what are, in my opinion, minor problems, but which also have their impact:
The size of these vehicles : SUVs are in fashion. When you are young, you buy (if you can) a small car that runs and makes a lot of noise. When you are a parent, you prefer a large car so that the child's stroller fits in, and when you retire, you choose a Mercedes. The current range of electric vehicles is taking time to reach SUVs , and although there are hybrids, they have not yet reached the purely electric range.
