Romanian startup develops smart glasses that will help the blind see

For most of us, the world is full of innovations that are constantly emerging and making our lives easier. However, for the 338 million people who are completely or partially blind, there are far fewer solutions aimed at improving their lives. Bucharest-based startup .lumen is trying to change that with artificial intelligence-powered glasses for the blind.



The startup just raised €4 million from the Slovak venture denmark phone number material fund Venture to Future and the European Innovation Council.

Cornel Amariei, founder and CEO of the startup, says that he grew up in a family with disabilities and saw how technology can change the world and how much still needs to be done.

"I founded .lumen to help people, and in the process I noticed that we could do so much more."

What does .lumen do?
The .lumen glasses resemble a virtual reality headset in appearance — they use technology similar to that found in autonomous cars and provide a kind of alternative to guide dogs. The product uses visual sensors and an artificial intelligence model to spot obstacles and help the owner avoid them.
