Since generative AI burst onto the scene, Google's undisputed leadership in the search field has inevitably been under threat. However, during the first quarter of the year, revenue from advertising on Google's search engine continued to grow at a good pace (and even above average).

Between January and March 2024, search advertising brought in $46 billion in Google 's coffers, 14% more than in the same period last year. This huge figure is the most significant growth in advertising on Google's search engine in two years.

During its latest quarterly results presentation, Google called itself an “AI-first” company and stressed that AI was complementing, but by no means undermining, its advertising offerings.

“We have a very clear roadmap focused on AI monetization that includes advertising and cloud computing, as well as subscriptions ,” said Sunday Pichai, CEO of Alphabet , Google’s parent company. Meanwhile, Philipp Schindler, CFO of the internet giant, said the company is experimenting with new advertising formats in searches powered by generative AI.

manage the transition to other monetization streams," Pichai said.

Looking at YouTube, Google's video platform also recorded growth that was above the average benin whatsapp data of the previous quarters over the past two years. YouTube revenue jumped by 21% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Google also expects Shorts to play an increasingly important role in YouTube's revenue stream. Schindler is confident that Shorts' monetization rate will soon catch up with the monetization rate of other YouTube videos.

Google fared worse in revenues directly derived from its display network . In this division, revenues fell by 1% year-on-year. This is the seventh consecutive quarter that Google has encountered a drop in revenues in this section.

It is also the case that this is the division that will be most affected by the death of cookies , which Google delayed for the third time until early 2025 this week .

Google's advertising business as a whole grew by 13% between January and March 2024 to $61.66 billion (€57.49 billion).

Google parent Alphabet saw its revenues rise 15% to $80.5 billion (above the $79 billion initially expected by analysts). And group profits rose to $23.66 billion, compared to the $15 billion Google earned in the first quarter of 2023.

These good results were greatly contributed to by Google's cloud computing division , which generated operating profits of 900 million dollars , an extraordinarily outstanding growth compared to the 191 million dollars earned in the first quarter of 2023.
